The title for the Autumn-Winter 2011 range was actually taken from a collection of dressmaking books that Deryn’s Nana subscribed to in the 1960s. They were a small quarterly publication, illustrating the styles and designs of the day. “While flicking through the pages of the various supplements I was inspired by some of the shapes, lines and details used. Then I saw the words ‘The Golden Rule’, and that was it, my next range had a name!"
This, the second Deryn Schmidt collection, continues to illustrate a love of colour and natural fabrics to create garments that not only look great, but feel great too. There are warm colours throughout such as raisin, gold, burnt orange, red and coral tones to compliment the winter greys, charcoals and blacks.
Let us also reflect on ‘The Golden Rule’ as it most commonly recognised, as an ethical code. It states that one has a right to just treatment, and responsibility to ensure justice for others. It is best interpreted as saying: ‘Treat others only as you consent to being treated in the same situation’.
By combining our knowledge and imagination, with inspiration from ‘The Golden Rule’ (the code as well as the Deryn Schmidt range) we will all be looking and feeling great for Autumn-Winter 2011 and beyond.
